What Are Wisdom Teeth Removals ?

Most people get their wisdom teeth in their late teens or early 20s. While some people will ultimately keep their wisdom teeth for the remainder of their lives, others will undergo a wisdom teeth extraction.

Since wisdom teeth often grow at a severe angle, become impacted or crowd other teeth, it is very common for these teeth to be removed. This routine procedure is incredibly safe, and typically little-to-no pain is felt during the process.

Benefits of Wisdom Teeth Removals

    • Protect Other Teeth From Damage:

Wisdom teeth can put a lot of pressure on the adjacent molars, possibly grinding away their enamel or damaging their roots. The roots of a wisdom tooth are very large and unpredictable. These roots can grow into the roots of other teeth or pierce facial nerves, specifically the inferior alveolar nerve which gives sensation to the lower lip, chin, and cheek. Infection from a wisdom tooth can spread to other teeth, leading to cavities or even bone loss.

    • Less Overcrowding Means Less Orthodontics:

The average adult mouth can hold 28 teeth. An extra set of molars trying to make room can lead to dental overcrowding. When there are too many teeth in the dental arch, the teeth are slowly pushed out of alignment to try to make room. Having wisdom teeth extracted can lessen the likelihood of needing braces, or greatly reduce the alignment issues that future orthodontic treatment seeks to correct.

    • Prevent Infection:

Wisdom teeth can fully erupt through the gum tissue, partially erupt, or become impacted, which means the tooth is stuck beneath the gums. When a tooth partially erupts, it becomes a magnet for food and infection-causing bacteria. Cysts and tumors can form around an infected tooth, which can invade the jaw bone and cause TMJ pain. Infected wisdom teeth can be prevented by having them extracted as soon as possible.

    • Better Oral Hygiene:

A partially erupted wisdom tooth is very difficult to clean around, because only a portion of the tooth can be accessed. A wisdom tooth that has fully erupted through the gums can also be difficult to clean because space is limited, making it hard to get a toothbrush around all sides of the tooth and floss between them.

Our Wisdom Teeth Removal Process

Before removing wisdom teeth, we will discuss the best anesthesia for your needs and comfort.

An incision is made in the gum tissue; The wisdom tooth is removed; The site of the removed tooth is cleaned; The wound is stitched close to promote healing, though this isn’t always necessary; Gauze is placed over the extraction site to control bleeding and to help a blood clot form. Following surgery, if necessary, we will prescribe a painkiller.

The recovery process for wisdom teeth removal varies from a few days to more than a week depending upon how badly the teeth were impacted prior to removal. While most normal activities can be resumed during the recovery process, the patient must be careful not to disturb the blood clot that will have formed over the extraction site.

During recovery, it is recommended that the patient only consume soft foods. In some cases, it might take an entire week before hard foods can be comfortably chewed. Patients are also advised to drink plenty of fluids and to avoid using a straw. Patients who experience additional complications such as dry sockets are advised to contact our office immediately for necessary treatment.

Cozy Family Dental is dedicated to ensuring every visit is a positive experience. Our friendly staff and comfortable environment make us the go-to choice of dental care for the patients in Wayne, NJ and the surrounding areas.

FAQs About Wisdom Teeth Removals

Q: What Are The Symptoms Of Wisdom Teeth?

A: Concerning symptoms of wisdom teeth can be pain in the jaw, tenderness, swelling around the gums, and discharge if an abscess or infection is present. You may also see the wisdom tooth enamel poking through the gum behind your second molar.

Q: When Do Wisdom Teeth Emerge?

A: Wisdom teeth usually emerge sometime between the ages of 17 and 25. In many cases, however, the mouth is too crowded for third molars to develop normally. Less frequently, the wisdom teeth can emerge without any problems and line up with the other teeth behind the second molars.

Q: Do Wisdom Teeth Need To Be Removed?

A: If you do not have enough room in your mouth for your third molars to fully erupt, several problems can happen and tend to occur with increasing frequency after the age of 30. Some of the possible problems if not removing your wisdom teeth include infection, cyst formation, crowding, and damage to the adjacent teeth.

Q: When Should WisdomI Teeth Be Removed?

A: Wisdom teeth removal during your teenage years is generally easier for you to recover from. Since young patients also have higher regenerative capabilities, their recovery process is a lot less uncomfortable in comparison to older adults.

Q: How Long Does Wisdom Teeth Extraction Take?

A: Wisdom teeth surgery and post-anesthesia monitoring typically take a little over an hour. It depends on your wisdom teeth positions and anesthesia recommended and selected for your case.

Q: How Long Does Wisdom Tooth Removal Take To Heal?

A: Your tooth sockets are mostly closed by about week 3 after your surgery, and they should be fully closed by the end of week 4.

Q: Is Removing A Wisdom Tooth Painful?

A: Wisdom teeth removal is commonly a surgical procedure. As a result, once the anesthetic has worn off, some feeling of pain or discomfort at the extraction site is completely normal.
