What Are Dental Inlays & Onlays?

Dental Inlays, Onlays, Crowns & Fillings are often confused. Inlays & onlays are two methods of restoring the structure of teeth after decay or damage. Dental inlays are fitted and molded in the chewing area of your tooth that has been damaged through injury or decay. On the other hand, onlays are used for damage and deterioration to the cusps of your tooth as well as the biting surface.

In cases of damaged or decayed teeth, inlays and onlays are used when a full dental crown is unnecessary. These two methods are designed to recover the appearance and function of teeth that are too damaged to be repaired with a regular filling. The end result is a completely restored tooth that has both its full usage and an entirely natural look.

    • Inlays:

An inlay is a very common procedure that is performed on teeth that are too damaged to be restored with a regular filling, but not so damaged that an entire crown is needed. It consists of applying filling material to the interior of the tooth, covering some or all of the area within the cusps, or points, of the tooth. Unlike an onlay, an inlay will not cover any of the tooth’s cusps. Because inlays are custom-fit using impressions of the patient’s teeth, the simple procedure results in teeth that are both stronger and more durable than teeth that have been treated with a standard filling.

    • Onlays:

When a tooth is damaged in such a way that the repair must cover at least one of its cusps, or points, an onlay is often used to restore its appearance and function. In certain cases, an onlay might be designed to cover the entire chewing surface of the tooth. When an onlay is applied, the filling material is usually directly fixed to one or more of the tooth’s cusps. Onlays are recommended to patients in situations when a dental crown is not needed, but the full restoration of the tooth is still required.

Benefits of Dental Inlays & Onlays

Dental Inlays and Onlays have many advantages for your oral health. Dr. Li listed some as follows for your understanding:

    • Safe Option:

Dental Inlays and Onlays are very safe. Having an Onlay or inlay placed in your mouth may improve your dental health.  Because your inlay or onlay is attached to the tooth that needs treatment, bacteria or other infections have little chance of penetrating the fissures in your gums or teeth. The adhesive will make a tight seal, preventing any additional damage

    • Improved Strength:

Dental Inlays and Onlays can be long-lasting solutions, and they can also significantly increase the efficiency of your teeth. Dental inlays can significantly increase the strength of your teeth.

    • Very Durable:

Onlays are used to treat more serious damage. Inlays, on the other hand, are a type of filling that can be used to heal cavities and other issues.

Since inlays and onlays are cemented to the tooth, they are a highly long-lasting solution for damaged teeth. They create a tight seal around your tooth, preventing further injury, infection, or inflammation. An inlay or onlay is a reliable solution for all of your oral health difficulties, as it is made of scratch-resistant and long-lasting biocompatible material.

    • Improved Durability:

This is an effective option for people who want to extend the durability of their teeth. Since they are constructed of a very durable product like porcelain, inlays and onlays are designed to endure a lifetime and can withstand significant destruction.

Our Dental Inlays & Onlays Process

At Cozy Family Dental, we ensure a comfortable Inlays & Onlays procedure for patients in Wayne, NJ and the surrounding areas.

Dental inlays and onlays are categorized into two types: Direct and Indirect.

    • Direct Inlays and Onlays:

Direct inlays and onlays are made in our office and are usually fitted in a single appointment.

    • Indirect Inlays and Onlays:

Indirect inlays and onlays are made in a laboratory setting. On the first day of the procedure, Dr. Yan Li takes an impression of the tooth and sends it to a laboratory to create the permanent inlay or onlay. The permanent inlay or onlay is then fitted during a second appointment.

FAQs About Dental Inlays & Onlays

Q: Is a Dental Inlay and Onlay Painful?

A: During the procedure, the dentist will numb the area so that you won’t feel any pain. However, after the anesthetic wears off, you may feel minimal pain and discomfort in the mouth. Your dentist may give you painkillers to manage the discomfort.

Q: What Are Differences Between Dental Inlay And Dental Filling?

A: The difference between an inlay and a filling lies in the size and location of the restoration. Fillings are used to repair smaller areas of tooth decay while inlays are for more extensive damage that may extend to the tooth’s cusps.

Q: What Are Diferences Between Dental Onlay And Dental Crown?

A: Dental onlays and dental crowns are both restorative treatments used to repair damaged teeth. Onlays are used to repair a specific portion of a tooth. Crowns, on the other hand, encompass the entire tooth and is often recommended when you need extensive repairs.

Q: How Long Does The Procedure Take?

A: Generally, each visit will take about one hour, although the first appointment tends to be longer with an onlay as more tooth structure is removed.

Q: What Will Happen At The Initial Consultation?

A: At the initial consultation, Dr. Yan Li will determine whether the tooth can be repaired using an inlay or onlay procedure or whether a more extensive treatment, such as a crown, is needed. Once it is determined that an inlay or onlay will suffice, a decision needs to be made as to the material. Gold has the longest track record, but it does tend to be less esthetic appealing. Porcelain and tooth colored composite resin are two other choices of material for the new tooth structure. Because both of these materials are tooth colored they are particularly favored if the tooth is visible or if esthetic results are an important goal.
