Sealants
Dental sealants are one of the easiest and most efficient methods of preventing cavities and decay on the chewing surface of a person’s back teeth. The quick and easy procedure consists of applying an ultra-thin layer of acrylic to the surface of the tooth. This seals off any deep pits and fissures that might be present. By doing this, an effective barrier is created to protect the tooth’s enamel from bacteria and acids.
Such grooves and fissures found on back teeth are some of the most optimal breeding grounds for oral bacteria. Because of this, about 75 percent of all tooth decay occurs in these areas. Additionally, these areas are some of the most difficult places within the mouth to reach, even with proper brushing and flossing techniques.
With sealants, these rough surfaces are smoothed, making them significantly easier to clean and maintain. Properly applied dental sealants are designed to protect a person’s teeth for many years to come. An oral care expert will examine the patient’s sealants for wear and chipping during their regular dental check-ups.
Dental sealants are often recommended for children and teenagers who are still developing proper brushing and flossing habits. Baby teeth possessing deep grooves or fissures are usually great candidates for sealants; however, many adults also use dental sealants to protect their teeth from damage and decay.
Applying Sealants
It only takes one visit to fully apply dental sealants to one’s teeth. On average, the process only requires a couple of minutes per tooth. The dental health expert starts by cleaning and drying any tooth that is designated for sealing. By using a cotton swab, the tooth is kept dry throughout the procedure. The surface of the tooth is then roughened using an etching solution. This allows the sealant coating to easily bond with the tooth.
After the tooth has been properly roughened, the etching solution is rinsed off and the tooth is again dried. The process is finished by applying sealant coating to the tooth and allowed to fully dry. The dental care expert will ensure that the grooves of the tooth have been adequately sealed. After the procedure is completed, the patient will be provided with instructions on how to properly care for their sealants.
