At Cozy Family Dental in New Jersey, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive dental care for the whole family.
Our dental bone grafting services are designed to add bone to the area where bone loss has occurred. Once the bone grafting has been completed, the grafted bone starts to integrate with the existing bone through body’s natural healing process. This creates a strong foundation for dental implant surgery.
What Are Dental Bone Grafting?
Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that allows for the placement of bone in areas of the jaws that are deficient in bone or need additional structural support. Bone grafting not only replaces missing bone, but also stimulates new bone growth.
Mostly, bone grafting is necessary when a patient doesn’t have sufficient jawbone mass to support a dental implant, bridge, crown, or dentures. Common factors that can lead to a deficiency of the jawbone include:
- Missing teeth
- Gum disease
- Development defects
- Dental trauma or facial injuries
The bone graft material may be taken from your own body (autogenous), or it may be purchased from a human tissue bank (allograft) or an animal tissue bank (xenograft). In some instances, the bone graft material may be synthetic (alloplast).
Benefits of Dental Bone Grafting
- Repairs Weak Jawbone – Periodontal disease, dental trauma, etc. are the major causes of jawbone loss. The key benefit of bone grafting is to restore your jawbone structure to its original form.
- Supports Gums and Teeth – healthy bone structure keeps your gums and teeth in position, protecting you from gum disease and teeth loss.
- Maintains Facial Structure – Bone grafting repairs your jawbone, further lifting your facial muscles.
- Supports Dental Implants And Other Restorations – Bone grafting also supports dental restorations such as dental implants, crowns, dentures, and bridges. Dr. Yan Li use bone grafts to regenerate enough bone to anchor the dental implant teeth structure.
- Saves Teeth – Bone grafting may be needed to solve existing dental problems leading to bone loss, making patient’s teeth and gums lose. Bone grafts regenerate the surrounding bone, saving teeth.
Our Dental Bone Grafting Process
At Cozy Family Dental, we ensure a comfortable bone grafting procedure for patients in Wayne, NJ and the surrounding areas.
Initial Examination: During your checkup, we use visual examination and X-rays to to determine the extent of your bone loss.
Preparation On Surgery Day: The affected area is numbed with a local anesthetic to ensure a pain-free experience.
Filling Placement: Dr. Li will create a small incision in your gums. Gum tissue is moved back slightly so that the jawbone is visible. After cleaning and disinfecting the area, Dr. Li will add bone grafting material to repair the defect. In many cases, the bone graft is covered with a membrane for additional protection.
Post-Filling: The gum tissue is repositioned and the incision is closed with stitches.
FAQs About Dental Bone Grafting
Q: How Will I Know if I Need a Dental Bone Graft?
A: At Cozy Family Dental, Dr. Yan Li will be able to diagnose bone loss and determine if a bone graft is necessary. During an initial exam, Dr. Li will take x-rays of your jaw to assess the condition of the bone. If there is an insufficient amount or quality of bone in your jaw, they will recommend a dental bone graft.
Q: Are There Any Risks With Dental Bone Grafting?
A: Like any surgical procedure, there are some risks associated with dental bone grafts. These include infection, nerve damage, etc. Dr. Yan Li will discuss all the potential risks in detail before you undergo the procedure.
Q: How Long Does a Dental Bone Graft Take To Heal?
A: Generally, healing times range from three to six months, depending on the complexity of the graft. The amount of time it takes to heal from a dental bone graft will depend on the type of bone graft used and the extent of the procedure. During this time, you must follow your oral surgeon’s post-surgical instructions to avoid any complications and ensure a successful recovery.
Q: Can My Body Reject The Graft?
A: No, because it does not contain any genetically coded or living material — only minerals. The sole issue is how much bone your body will make in response to the graft. If the appropriate level has not been achieved by the time the graft has healed, more grafting material can be added at the same time the implant is placed.
Q: Where Does The Grafting Material Come From?
A: It could come from a variety of sources, including your own body. These days, however, laboratory-processed bone from a human or animal donor (usually a cow), as well as synthetic materials, are frequently used
